Transportation

Whether roads, railways or airports, transportation systems pose a frequent acoustic challenge at new building sites. Accurate modeling of these noise sources is crucial to ensuring code compliance and user comfort, while eliminating the potential for remediation post-construction when acoustic fixes are usually more expensive.

Define the challenge

We begin transportation noise studies with an analysis of a site’s unique conditions and all of its surrounding noise sources. We take on-site measurements at varying heights, then assess how the sound will interact with all of the proposed structures and outdoor areas. To do this, we rely on the Federal Highway Administration’s traffic noise model, the Department of Housing and Urban Development Noise Guidebook, and sophisticated 3D modeling using DataKustik’s CadnaA software. We make use of industry-standard calibration for all of our noise models, and each is supervised by a professional engineer accredited by the Institute of Noise Control Engineering. When available we use field measurements to calibrate our noise models, and each is supervised by a professional engineer accredited by the Institute of Noise Control Engineering.

Find a solution

We’ve helped hundreds of clients achieve compliance with local, state and federal noise regulations. For spaces indoors, our proprietary software allows us to conduct building shell analyses for a single room or an entire multi-story building. We use the resulting data to recommend STC ratings for walls, roofs, windows, doors and other components to ensure your design meets indoor noise targets. Outside, barrier optimization tools within our analytical systems allow us to recommend the most appropriate site planning or noise barriers for a given transportation noise challenge.

Often, our contribution to a site’s design also extends to the ground vibration from trains and highways. We provide similar services for measuring and modeling such impacts, then help projects achieve compliance with industry standards for vibration. Whether your challenge involves the earth-rattling impact of freight train traffic or the rush-hour highway noise anticipated in an outdoor common area, rely on Phoenix Noise & Vibration to quantify the problem and bring its effects under control.
